Behind Gustavo Dudamel’s Journey to the FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show

When Gustavo Dudamel stepped onto the stage at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Final Halftime Show, he wasn’t simply conducting an orchestra. Dudamel would become one of El Sistema’s most recognized graduates before eventually leading the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, the program’s flagship orchestra. Together, they introduced audiences around the world to the artistic excellence emerging from Venezuela, performing in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls while demonstrating the lasting impact of music education.

That philosophy has continued to shape every stage of Dudamel’s career. As Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he became known not only for his performances but also for expanding the reach of orchestral music through collaborations that introduced new audiences to the art form. In 2019, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming one of the few conductors to receive the honor. His work has included Disney+’s Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles alongside Billie Eilish, contributing to the soundtrack of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the invitation of legendary composer John Williams, and appearances across film and television.

Beyond the podium, education has remained at the heart of his work. Inspired by his own experience growing up in El Sistema, Dudamel continues to advocate for arts education through the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), initiatives dedicated to expanding access to music and creating opportunities for young people through the arts.

Today, Dudamel serves as Music & Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic while continuing his long-standing relationship with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela.
