When the best artists of a genre tend to take hiatuses or retire from music, the genre typically plateaus, and the world expects a period of time where there may be no new heir to the throne. But with reggaeton, the new era has been promising for a long time now, and it has already begun to take over music charts and social media. And although trends and one-hit wonders come and go, when you have the biggest artists—such as Bad Bunny, Karol G, Young Miko, and many more—backing the new generation of reggaeton, you know not only are they here to stay, but that there’s truly something special about them. That’s exactly what Puerto Rican rising superstar Dei V has done with his talents. Not only does Dei V have many hit collaborations with some of the biggest names in reggaeton, but he also has the support of a massive fan base and the giants of the music industry who were there for the revival of the genre. Dei V is a rising star in reggaeton and one of the faces of its new era, and I was lucky enough to see him live not just once, but multiple times. While headlining huge music festivals like Sueños Music Festival in Chicago just a few weeks ago, Dei V is also on a North American tour—where I got to cover his Los Angeles show at the Regent Theater.

It’s not very often that you see an artist make this much noise and gain popularity as fast as Dei V has, especially in this genre. But what may seem like an overnight rise came after years of dedication and passion for music. Day-one Dei V supporters lined up early to show love for his first North American tour, where he not only played his biggest hits but also performed songs that first put him on the map. Fans showed up dressed in swimwear, floaties, and goggles—matching the theme of his signature catchphrase, “Under Water.” Not only did fans wrap around the block to get in and secure a good spot, but Dei V also sold out the Regent Theater, with people waiting outside hoping to buy last-minute tickets. The theater was packed from wall to wall with fans ready to hear their favorite artist perform hits like “Amber,” “Narcotics,” “TU$$I,” “GATITA GANGSTER,” and even “Sirena.” All of these tracks stem from some of his most notable collaborations, but Dei V has now truly solidified his name in the music industry—not just with his features, but with two solo albums fans were chanting all night.

The lights finally turned off, and the theater began to shake with fans screaming, knowing the time had come. I was there with my camera in hand, and the media pit was nearly impossible to move through because of how packed general admission was. I haven’t been to a concert this intimate and electric in a long time, and that’s when I realized how special Dei V really is. As the music began to fade in and heavy neon lights flashed across the venue, Dei V finally appeared onstage wearing his iconic “GLIZZYGANG” hoodie, tracksuit pants, and sunglasses. And of course, the entrance track was perfect—he kicked off with “¿Quién es Dei V?” Fans screamed every single lyric the second he started rapping their favorite verses. Dei V kept the energy high all night, performing hit after hit while fans had the time of their lives. In the general admission pit, fans were jumping and dancing nonstop—especially after a short intermission when a recap video of Dei V’s tour played on the screens. He returned with a water gun in hand, spraying the crowd and even grabbing a pair of goggles from a fan to play along with his underwater theme.

Dei V is the face of a new era of urban Latin music and reggaeton. His rise to fame proves just how talented he is and that he’s only going to continue delivering more music and more hits. After collaborating with fellow Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny on their viral hit “VeLDÁ,” it became clear that even the biggest artists from his homeland are supporting his journey. Artists like Mora, Feid, Myke Towers, Jay Wheeler, and many more continue to collaborate with Dei V and push forward rising names like him and Omar Courtz to lead the new wave of reggaeton. It’s safe to say the genre is in good hands—and here to stay for a very long time. Dei V’s latest album, Los Flavorz, is out now on all streaming platforms, and he’ll continue his Los Flavorz tour next through Spain.
