Dolores Huerta is not only an icon to all Latinx individuals in today's society, but she is a prime example of a civil rights activist and a woman leader who has helped shape the world we live in today. Homeboy Industries and Tepito Coffee came together on this special day to honor and recognize a tribute event for all that she has done in her community and for many minorities across the country. Apart from founding the UFW (United Farm Workers), she has been a strong voice for the Latinx community and women's rights throughout her lifetime. Having her present at today’s event was truly a surreal experience for many of her supporters, fans, and members of the media. And what better place to honor her than in the beautiful city of Pasadena, CA, where many city officials showed up to pay their respects for this special moment.

The event kicked off with a special speech from the Tepito Coffee team, who not only introduced her but also welcomed guests—such as a middle school from Burbank that brought her gifts and shared how they fought to change their school’s official name from a former racist figure to hers, in honor of all she has done for the community. In addition to the middle school, there were also speeches from city officials Lisa Barrios, District 3 Liaison for Councilmember Justin Jones, and Vannia De La Cuba, Deputy to the Mayor. Both city officials shared their gratitude for her presence in the city and expressed their appreciation for the impact she had made in their lives as Latina city leaders.

And of course, Homeboy Industries CEO Shirley Torres made an appearance and shared a few heartfelt words of gratitude for what Dolores has done for her and her community growing up. This event was special in every aspect—for students, teachers, city officials, media, and even the café’s employees. The biggest moment of the entire event had to be when Tepito Coffee dedicated and honored their business to her, presenting her with a plaque and announcing the official dedication of their establishment in her name.

This event was a true celebration of the history, impact, and change that Dolores Huerta has brought to Latinx communities, minorities, and women everywhere. Beyond the delicious coffee drinks—where a portion of proceeds was donated to the Dolores Huerta Foundation—there was also a full women’s mariachi group who performed for her and the many supporters in attendance. This day was full of surprises, tears, appreciation, and community. It’s events like this where people of all ages come together for a powerful and strong cause—to not only support one another but to uplift those who don’t have a voice. Dolores Huerta’s greatness will forever be remembered and recognized, especially at Tepito Coffee in Pasadena, CA.
