I had the privilege of covering Apple TV+ and the Imagine Foundation’s Latinx Celebration red carpet event that took place on May 5, 2024. These two organizations came together to honor Latinx talent and content on Apple TV’s streaming platform. As a Latino deeply involved in the music industry, I constantly witness the growing representation and impact of Latinos in entertainment. However, seeing firsthand the incredible filmmakers and actors shaping the film industry for Latinos was truly inspiring. Witnessing these Latinx stars in prominent roles in Apple TV series and movies was a powerful moment, highlighting the strides being made to incorporate Latinx talent in meaningful ways.

The event took place at the renowned Hollywood Athletic Club, a venue known for hosting high-profile events and red carpets. This particular day was dedicated to celebrating Latinx excellence in film. Upon arrival, I set up my camera equipment as stars began to arrive one after another. The press area buzzed with excitement as journalists conducted interviews with filmmakers, producers, writers, and actors. It was incredible to see the recognition the Latino community was receiving, especially on such a significant occasion. Popular Apple TV shows such as Acapulco, Land of Women, and Now and Then featured many of the stars being celebrated at the event.

Beyond the red carpet and interviews, a panel discussion featured various actors sharing their experiences as Latinos in the film industry and their firsthand accounts of working on Apple TV productions. Dozens of Latino creatives took the stage, addressing questions about their struggles, the stereotypes they’ve encountered, and advice for the next generation of Latino talent. The panel shed light on the resilience and diversity within the Latinx creative community.

Following the panel, the celebration continued with a tribute to those who have contributed to Apple TV’s efforts in championing Latinx culture. On the second floor of the Athletic Club, organizers recreated sets from popular Apple TV series, allowing guests to take photos and interact with real props and stage designs used in filming. This immersive experience added a unique and personal touch, allowing attendees to engage with the shows in a tangible way.

One of the highlights of the night was meeting and speaking with stars I had admired on screen for years. I had the privilege of speaking with Constance Marie, known for her role in The George Lopez Show in 2002. We discussed her experiences on set and the importance of Latino representation in television. As a Latino child growing up in the early 2000s, The George Lopez Show was a groundbreaking moment—it was one of the few times I saw a full Latino cast reflecting our culture and experiences. Constance Marie expressed gratitude that her work had such a lasting impact, and our conversation was a reminder of how crucial representation is.

The event left a deep impression on me as a Latino creative in the industry. One of the most impactful moments came from Natalie Morales during her panel discussion. She stated, "Stereotypes for roles in this industry still exist, but it is up to us as Latinos to try and say no and break that stereotype so we can land bigger roles, as we are doing today." The power of her words resonated with everyone in the room, reaching beyond the Latino community to anyone who has faced barriers in their career.

Apple TV+ did a phenomenal job in highlighting and celebrating Latinx talent in the film industry, making this event truly unforgettable. Special thanks to Doriam Romero for making this event possible.
