What was hyped as one of the most exciting quarterfinal matchups in the Concacaf Champions Cup turned into a measured and, at times, uneventful first leg at BMO Stadium, as LAFC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Inter Miami. The reigning MLS Cup finalists now carry a slim advantage heading into next week’s decisive return leg in Miami.

Both sides had their moments, but the final product was lacking. Despite nearly 20 combined shots between the two teams, most efforts failed to trouble either goalkeeper, with the majority flying off target. LAFC will likely feel they should have walked away with more than just a one-goal cushion, especially after facing what was arguably Inter Miami’s weakest performance of the season—marking their first loss in 2024.

Outside of a few flashes of brilliance from Lionel Messi, Miami looked uninspired and disjointed for long stretches. The midfield lacked cohesion, and their attacking options never truly tested LAFC's backline. Still, with the return leg looming and Messi’s ability to change any game in a moment, no one will be counting Miami out just yet.

That said, LAFC now find themselves in pole position to advance to the semifinals, where they’ll face the winner of the Pumas UNAM vs. Vancouver Whitecaps tie (currently level at 1-1). If the Black and Gold can maintain their defensive composure and capitalize on the counter, they could be on track for another deep Champions Cup run.
