Son’s debut match at BMO Stadium was more than just another player’s first game for LAFC. It was a statement to Los Angeles and the entire country that MLS is growing and reaching new levels every season. The transfer of Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur to LAFC didn’t just make the club stronger—it brought a whole new fan base and culture to the club. With Son now wearing black and gold, the new energy at the stadium was obvious even before his debut match against San Diego FC. Hundreds of Asian American fans came out to support, rocking either his old Tottenham jersey, his brand-new LAFC kit, or his South Korea national team shirt. The fan section even brought brand-new flags, custom merch, and banners just for Son, adding fresh energy to the BMO.

Fans arrived hours early to tailgate and lock down their seats, setting the tone that this game was going to be unlike anything we’ve seen before. San Diego FC made sure to bring the noise as well, rolling up with five full buses of supporters who were chanting the second they hit the freeway exit. The LA vs. San Diego rivalry isn’t new in sports, but between these two clubs it feels fresh—and now, with Son’s debut on the line, the tension was at a whole new level. Both sides were ready to go to war, with LAFC determined to welcome their new star in the best way possible.

As both teams walked onto the pitch and lined up for handshakes, fireworks exploded and the crowd erupted in chants from both sides. We weren’t in Europe, but it felt like it: smog, fireworks, tifos, flags, and nonstop energy that was fitting for a superstar like Son. When the whistle blew, the stage was set.

It didn’t take long for the action to start. SDFC found a quick break down the left and forced an early save out of Lloris, showing they came to compete. All eyes were on Son—already a goal scorer in LAFC’s previous match—but this home debut carried more weight. He played more strategically, focusing on his runs and passing while staying patient on goal attempts. In the 14th minute, David Martinez dropped a dime to Bouanga, who chipped the keeper to open the scoring. Soon after, Valencia swung in a cross to Bouanga in the 24th, but what looked like a certain goal turned into a shocking miss. Still, LAFC had woken up. The fire sparked again in the 32nd when SDFC’s Dreyer chipped a perfect ball over the defense to Chucky Lozano, who controlled it and finished clean to level the score. Before the half ended, Dauh blocked a Bouanga shot that looked destined for the net, while Son tested the keeper with a curling strike from the right side. LAFC pushed hard for a late goal, but the score stayed even at the break.

The second half kicked off with LAFC on the attack, swinging in an early cross, but no one could finish. Then, against the run of play, SDFC sliced through with a beautiful through ball from deep. Dreyer broke free, flicked it behind him, then cut past two LAFC defenders before burying it in the back of the net. The stadium went quiet—except for the top corner packed with SDFC fans going wild. This was a true California rivalry, and neither side was backing down.

In the 77th minute, Son nearly had his moment. After a slick one-two with Bouanga, he pushed forward and ripped a shot that smashed off the right post, leaving the stadium in disbelief. Minutes later, he slipped into the box again, dribbling down the line and floating in a perfect cross, but the SDFC defense cleared it away. The closing stretch felt like it was building toward Son’s first BMO goal. In stoppage time, Bouanga battled for the ball and laid it off to Son, but the keeper shut down the shot. After nine tense minutes of added time, the final whistle blew. SDFC had held on for the win, spoiling the debut night but leaving the stadium buzzing with drama, action, and pure football energy.

Even without the result fans hoped for, one takeaway was clear: this LAFC team wants to win more than ever. With a world-class player like Son now on the roster, you can see exactly why he earned so many accolades and spent years dominating in the Premier League. His intensity has already rubbed off on the squad, and the future of LAFC looks bright. One thing’s for sure—we’re only just getting started with Sonny.
